Over Half a Million Kazakhstani Engage in Traditional Sports

Within the country, the number of individuals participating in traditional sports on a systematic basis has increased by 35% over a span of 3 years.

In Kazakhstan, the year 2020 saw 432,000 people engaging in traditional sports. By the end of 2022, this figure had risen to 584,000 individuals, as reported by Sarbaz.kz, citing the Ministry of Culture and Sports of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The most significant growth was observed in the Turkistan region, where an additional 28,000 people embraced traditional sports, contributing to a total of over 110,000 practitioners in the region.

The top three regions leading in the number of individuals participating in traditional sports also include Zhambyl (40,000 individuals) and Almaty (39,000 individuals) regions.

A number of regions reported an increase of 10,000 athletes: in the Kostanay region – from 13,000 to 23,000, in the Kyzylorda region – from 20,000 to 30,000, in the Pavlodar region – from 17,000 to 27,000, in the North Kazakhstan region – from 8,000 to 18,000, and in Shymkent – from 10,000 to 20,000.

Furthermore, the Ministry of Culture and Sports highlights that in terms of the number of athletes in the Kazakhstan national team, the leading regions are Turkistan (74 individuals), Zhambyl (52 individuals), and the city of Astana (43 individuals).
