Investments into the Defense Sector have Grown by 37% in the Past Year

The East Kazakhstan Region (EKR), Akmola, and Ulytau regions trailing behind in the rankings.

The lion's share of these investments has been directed towards Almaty, as reported by Sarbaz.kz, citing Finprom.

From January to July 2023, investments in the realm of public administration and defense reached 69.5 billion tenge, with a real growth rate of 36.6%. For comparison, during the same period in 2022, the volume was only 48.5 billion KZT, and in 2021, it was 23 billion KZT.

Regionally, the largest volume of investments in this sector was allocated to Almaty, the Turkestan region, and the western regions of Kazakhstan. In particular, investments in public administration and defense in Almaty amounted to 18.3 billion KZT, marking an almost threefold (2.7 times) increase. The Turkestan region followed with 9.7 billion KZT, then Mangystau (6.3 billion KZT), and Atyrau regions (6.2 billion KZT). Remarkably, last year, investments in this sector in the Mangystau region amounted to a mere 89 million KZT.

The bottom three in terms of investment were EKR (0.6 billion KZT), Akmola (0.3 billion KZT), and the newly established Ulytau region (0.04 billion KZT).

Significantly, the majority of investments in public administration, defense, and social welfare stem from local budgets, totaling 36.7 billion KZT, while the national budget contributes a total of 17 billion KZT. In percentage terms and compared to the same period in the previous year, there has been a tremendous increase in the role of local budgets (a growth of 80%), accompanied by a reduction in the role of the national budget (a decrease of 36.2%).
