Major Dana Zhamalieva, an officer of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan, has been deployed as a military observer to the UN mission in Western Sahara, as reported by Sarbaz.kz.
The servicewoman successfully passed the selection process and underwent training both in Kazakhstan and abroad at the UN military observer training courses.
"Dana Zhamalieva is the seventh female service member of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan to be deployed in a UN peace and security support mission," noted the Center for Peacekeeping Operations of the Ministry of Defense of Kazakhstan.
Kazakhstan's defense department conducts this work in accordance with United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 (2000) "Women, Peace, and Security." The international document recommends increasing the participation of female service members in the Organization's missions.
Typically, women are the ones who gain the trust of the local population, which contributes to conflict prevention and mitigation. Therefore, the involvement of women in peacekeeping missions significantly enhances the effectiveness of civilian protection efforts.
