74-Year-Old Powerlifter from Karaganda Region Sets Two Asian Records

At the age of 74, Daribay Ospanov has achieved a remarkable feat, establishing new records.

Residing in the Karaganda region of Kazakhstan, Daribay Ospanov has emerged as the undisputed champion at the Asia, Oceania, and Africa Veterans Powerlifting Championship.

The Kazakhstani athlete secured the gold medal, outperforming competitors from Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei. The championship, held in Hong Kong, saw the participation of athletes from 80 countries worldwide.

Powerlifting, often referred to as strength triathlon, encompasses three disciplines: squat, bench press, and deadlift. These exercises collectively determine an athlete's qualification.

Daribay Ospanov, at the age of 74, has achieved a milestone by setting new records. At the Asia, Oceania, and Africa Championship, he accomplished the following in the classic division: squat - 130 kg, bench press - 120 kg, and deadlift - 150 kg, totaling 400 kg. Furthermore, in the equipped division, he achieved squat - 140 kg, bench press - 150 kg, and deadlift - 160 kg, amassing a total of 450 kg. Thus, he has set two equipped Asian records: 150 kg in bench press and 450 kg in the total.

This esteemed athlete resides in the village of Agadyr, in the Shet district of the Karaganda region. He was born on February 26, 1949. For a significant period, he worked in the construction and geodetic fields.

"I began engaging in sports at the age of 56. I started following the path of Allah, began praying, and significant changes occurred in my life," the champion shared

Daribay Ospanov's collection of sporting achievements includes 10 gold and 2 silver medals from Asia championships, along with 3 gold and 3 silver medals from world championships, in addition to 18 medals from Kazakhstan championships. He has also set a new world powerlifting record 12 times.

The athlete is already preparing for new challenges, with plans to establish a fresh world record at the upcoming Powerlifting Championship scheduled for autumn this year in Mongolia.
