A South Korean citizen has been executed in China, nine years after being sentenced to death for drug trafficking, reports Sarbaz.kz with reference to Chinese media.
In 2014, the South Korean national, accused of selling five kilograms of methamphetamine, was executed in one of China's prisons. The Chinese authorities had informed South Korea in advance through diplomatic channels about the execution.
Since the imposition of the death sentence, the South Korean government had repeatedly appealed through various channels to reconsider or postpone the execution on humanitarian grounds.
According to Chinese laws, specifically Article 347 of the Criminal Code, smuggling, trafficking, transporting, or manufacturing over 1 kilogram of opium, or more than 50 grams of methamphetamine or heroin, is punishable by death, life imprisonment, or imprisonment for more than 15 years.
Currently, a Kazakhstani citizen, Akzharqyn Turlibaev, is serving a life sentence in one of China's prisons. In 2014, she was arrested while departing from Guangzhou, and drugs were found in her luggage. A year later, she was sentenced to life imprisonment for drug smuggling. Despite appeals, the Chinese court upheld the sentence without alteration. In 2021, China also declined Kazakhstan's request for Turlibaev's extradition to serve her sentence in Kazakhstan.
